Building More Than Buildings: The Social Value Behind Easton Bevins’ Work

When we talk about construction and property, the conversation often focuses on budgets, programmes, compliance and the finished building. But buildings are about much more than bricks and mortar. They are homes, schools, places of worship, student accommodation and community spaces. They provide security, independence, opportunity and somewhere for people to connect.

That is why, at Easton Bevins, we believe social value is not simply something that can be added to a project. In many of the projects we work on, creating a positive impact for people and communities is at the very heart of what we do. From supporting vulnerable residents and creating specialist educational environments to protecting community buildings and helping people live independently, our work can make a meaningful difference long after the construction team has left site. Below are some example of buildings that are in the heart of their communities.

Emmanuel United Reformed Church in Swindon

The church is much more than a place of worship. Like many community churches, it provides a place for people to meet, organise activities and come together. The building, originally constructed in 1849, had deteriorating windows that needed significant investment. Easton Bevins worked with the church over a seven-year period, providing advice, developing designs, supporting funding applications and helping coordinate the project through a number of challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and rising construction costs. The church now has a building that is better equipped to serve its congregation and the wider community for many years to come.

Creating safer homes for older residents

Social value can mean making sure people feel safe, secure and supported in their own homes. In Bridgend, Easton Bevins worked with Valleys to Coast to refurbish sheltered housing at Treharne Row and Llys Cynffig. The works included improved fire safety, telecare systems, electrical upgrades and energy efficiency measures, helping elderly residents live more safely and independently. Careful planning and resident liaison ensured the work was completed with minimal disruption.

Easton Bevins has also supported Valleys to Coast with refurbishment works at Hafan Deg and Lakeview Close, two sheltered housing complexes providing assisted living accommodation for elderly and vulnerable residents.

Again, the work focused on more than simply maintaining buildings. It was about improving safety, quality of life, energy efficiency and the long-term sustainability of homes.

Creating environments where children and young people can thrive

Specialist education is another area where the built environment can make a real difference. At Oakwood College in Yate, Easton Bevins supported the development of a specialist SEND facility, from initial assessment through to design, planning and procurement. The project was designed around the needs of children and young people with autism, SEMH and learning difficulties, creating accessible spaces that support learning, independence and wellbeing. The result is a purpose-designed environment where pupils can feel comfortable, supported and ready to learn.

Supporting students and the wider university community

Supporting education and the next generation is another important part of our work. At Cardiff University, Easton Bevins planned and managed refurbishment works across five student accommodation buildings, including essential fire safety and communal area improvements. Despite a challenging deadline, the project was completed a full week ahead of programme, ensuring the accommodation was ready for students returning for the new academic year.
